Peer Review of the Aquaculture Science
Regional Fisheries Science Centers
NOS' National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries has released the results of the "... first-ever formal peer review of the aquaculture science conducted at six Regional Fisheries Science Centers (Northeast, Northwest, Southeast and U.S. Caribbean, Southwest, Alaska and Pacific Islands) and NOS' National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science ... The resulting report highlighted the high quality of research conducted by agency experts for many years, along with gaps and challenges facing the increasingly important aquaculture program ... The [review] panel's recommendations addressed current research gaps, and included comments on future gaps in growth areas like seaweed and macroalgae ..."

Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association

The AVMA's definitions of antimicrobial uses for prevention,
control, and treatment of disease

Recent state and federal legislative actions and current recommendations from the World Health Organization seem to suggest that, when it comes to antimicrobial stewardship, use of antimicrobials for prevention, control, or treatment of disease can be ranked in order of appropriateness, which in turn has led, in some instances, to attempts to limit or specifically oppose the routine use of medically important antimicrobials for prevention of disease. In contrast, the AVMA Committee on Antimicrobials believes that attempts to evaluate the degree of antimicrobial stewardship on the basis of therapeutic intent are misguided and that use of antimicrobials for prevention, control, or treatment of disease may comply with the principles of antimicrobial stewardship. It is important that veterinarians and animal caretakers are clear about the reason they may be administering antimicrobials to animals in their care. Concise definitions of prevention, control, and treatment of individuals and populations are necessary to avoid confusion and to help veterinarians clearly communicate their intentions when prescribing or recommending antimicrobial use.

FDA Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN)

Marine Biotoxin Management” is the title of a training video developed by FDA to "... provide a better understanding of specific biotoxin concepts in the National Shellfish Sanitation Program (NSSP), as described in the NSSP Guide for the Control of Molluscan Shellfish: 2017 Revision. The video, comprised of three learning modules, is a tool to help the seafood industry and state and federal agencies understand biotoxin sources and geographic distributions, develop or improve marine biotoxin management and control plans, and determine the appropriate laboratory methods for specific applications ..."

From AADAP

The FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine recently approved the supplemental new animal drug application (NADA) for Terramycin ®200 for Fish. This supplemental approval provides for the addition of an indication for marking the skeletal tissue of freshwater-reared salmonids weighing up to 55 grams. Label details: treatment dose of 3.75 g OTC per 100 lbs fish/day for 10 days; immediate release is permitted following last day of medicated feed; will need a Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) to order the medicated feed; and no extra label use allowed. The INAD will remain open for any non-label uses. If you would like to see the label expanded for your species or fish size,  contact AADAP. We can work with the drug sponsor and FDA to see what would need to be done.

 Fisheries of the U.S.
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has released its annual report which found that "... fishing and seafood consumption in the United States increased in 2017, with landings and value of U.S. fisheries continuing a strong, positive trend. Across the nation, American fishermen landed 9.9 billion pounds of fish and shellfish in 2017, while the U.S. imported 5.9 billion pounds of seafood, up 1.6 percent ... In addition, the report notes that the average American ate 16.0 pounds of fish and shellfish in 2017, up a significant 1.1 pounds from the year before ... The U.S. aquaculture industry produced $1.5 billion in 2016 — the most recent year aquaculture data is available — an increase from 1.4 billion in 2015. Thus, aquaculture represented approximately 21 percent of the value of the nation’s total seafood production in 2016. The top value domestic farmed marine species were oysters, clams, and salmon ... Shrimp, salmon, and tuna continue to top the list of imports for 2017, with a total value of all seafood imports of $21.5 billion (up 10.4 percent) ..." - NOAA also released the "... 11th Fisheries Economics of the United States report which provides the most up-to-date economic statistics on commercial and recreational fisheries as well as seafood-related businesses for each coastal state and the nation ..."
